I view this from a somewhat unique position. I am self-sufficient on the most remote island chain in the world. No matter what happens to everyone else, we are still self-sufficient.When the economy crashes, it does. When the power goes off, it does. Most farms aren't on the grid anyway.
We have people who are accumulating silver and gold as a hedge against something - but they may not completely grasp that we live on an island. Having a bag of silver won't preserve their wealth. Growing food will. Brewing beer will. Fishing will. Being a good neighbor will.
And that's what we do on islands anyway. You have to work together - there are no other choices - unless you want to go extinct - Easter Island comes to mind.
We are well positioned and naturally provisioned to survive in a rural setting, and we will. It never gets too cold and it never gets too hot. Food falls off trees and the ocean is full of fish. We have the cleanest air and water in the world right here. We set the standard by which air is measured. We have the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US on this island. We can make our own ethanol fuel from sugar cane and many people are already doing that.
Most everyone here has firearms, but we don't shoot each other with them. They are for hunting - feral pigs and goats, game birds and personal protection as a last resort. We won't have masses of people roaming the streets looking for food - we can feed what we have - and we won't have masses of people showing up here. You can't get here from there. But what bothers a lot of people is once you are here, if the commercial airlines aren't operating, you can't leave. You are here.
As far as I am concerned, it doesn't get any better than this. Farm people go to bed when it gets dark and get up with the chickens. We handle our own problems for the most part and everyone is friendly - for the most part.
I moved here for all of those reasons. I think the world is going to explode and I don't anticipate that living in a big city is going to be the much fun. Neither is farming - it's hard work. But you have what you need to live without having to depend on Obama and Congress to send you a check every month.
I don't care about conspiracy theories or the Rothschilds or the Bilderbergers or all the other excuses people have for not being able to take care of themselves. If you can't feed yourself and your family, you have no business expecting the government to do it for you. The Illuminati concept is just as silly - if it existed, I'd be a Major General in it - and not a farmer.
After 1999 - or, actually, 1963, if no one could see what was coming and get ready for it, they were blind - or asleep - and most still are. Individual responsibility still exists. People are just out of practice for the most part. That will get sorted out over the next couple of years.
There are a couple of kick-ass examples out there. One of my favorites is a hellion named Ann Barnhardt. OK, she's a Catholic fanatic - but she's a pistol. I wish there were more like her. If you missed her, try checking this out.
As for me, I'm going to keep on keeping on. And enjoying it.

It's a powerful system due to the numbers of people buying in and supporting it. They are not willing to stop making it happen. Some will change their minds when it collapses from within. Some will try to fight it head on. Some will run, hide, live to fight another day. It has been like this for the course of human history. You can't fix crazy, only shun it. Going out in a blaze of glory won't save your family and friends. Only the refugees and nomads are left to tell the tale.
There used to be a War council, and a Peace council. The impulses of the male warriors were always tempered by the advice of the women and children. I think the resulting balance of needs could lead to proper timing and proper action, if genocide is to be incomplete, this time around.Posterous is the place to post everything. Just email us.
