Supreme Court to consider if silence can be evidence of guilt 18 Jan 2013

The police are saying that someone MUST answer their questions and self-incriminate if they have not yet been warned they don't have to?  I don't think so.

If my physician ever asks if I own firearms, I'm going to say "I don't need any. I have a herd of unicorns.  But I'll put the word out to my police and physician friends that you are looking."

Supreme Court to consider if silence can be evidence of guilt 11 Jan 2013 The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to consider whether a suspect's refusal to answer police questions prior to being arrested and read his rights can be introduced as evidence of guilt at his subsequent murder trial. Without comment, the court agreed to hear the appeal of Genovevo Salinas, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison for the December 1992 deaths of two brothers in Houston... Salinas's lawyer argued that his client deserved a Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination, even though he had not been under arrest or read his rights under the landmark 1966 decision Miranda v. Arizona. The decision is Salinas v. Texas, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 12-246.

Mega barf alert! Insect-based flu vaccine approved by regulators --Production involves programming insect cells grown in steel tanks 17 Jan 2013 U.S. federal regulators say they have approved a new kind of vaccine for the flu virus. The new product, Flublok, which is available in limited supplies for the current season, is different from other flu vaccines, because it isn't made using eggs or an influenza virus, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday. Instead, Flublok's production involves programming insect cells grown in steel tanks to produce large amounts of a particular flu virus protein, known as hemagglutinin, according to Protein Sciences, the vaccine's manufacturer. This method allows for more rapid production, making more of the vaccine available more quickly in the event of a [lab-generated] pandemic, the FDA said.

Mali Islamists 'better-equipped' than expected --French forces engage in ground combat with rebels in town of Diabaly --Mali Islamists are 'well-trained and determined', French diplomat says --French troops in Mali now at 1,400, with eventual deployment of 2,500 --US agrees to French request for help airlifting troops and equipment

--France's Hollande calls war in Mali 'necessary' and 'legitimate'. 18 Jan 2013 French troops' initial clashes with Islamist militants in Mali have shown that the desert fighters are better trained and equipped than France had anticipated before last week's military intervention, French and other U.N. diplomats said. The realization that the fighting could be bloodier than anticipated in the weeks—or months—ahead might make Western countries even more reluctant to get involved alongside France. French officials, however, hope it will rally their allies behind them, diplomats say.

'Multiple' British hostages killed in bungled rescue mission in Algeria 17 Jan 2013 David Cameron has been warned to expect “multiple” Britons to be among up to 34 gas workers killed in the West’s worst hostage crisis in a generation.  A botched military attack on a BP gas plant in Algeria, where al-Qaeda [al-CIAduh] kidnappers were holding 41 westerners, led to a bloodbath as helicopter gunships opened fire on the compound. The attack was carried out against the wishes of Mr Cameron and other Western leaders, who had urged Algeria to negotiate with the kidnappers after the captives said bombs had been strapped to their bodies. At least one Briton was reported to have died, following the death on Wednesday of another Briton when the hostages were taken. Senior Downing Street sources said they were braced for “multiple British casualties”.

Holy coincidence, Batman! Just when the Pentagon is trolling for a reason to put boots on the ground: At Least 3 Americans Held Hostage by Al Qaeda-Linked Group in Algeria 16 Jan 2013 Two U.S. officials tell ABC News that Americans are among the hostages held following an attack by al Qaeda[al-CIAduh]-linked insurgents on a BP joint-venture natural gas field in Algeria. One of those, a senior intelligence official, said that it currently appears three U.S. citizens are being held. However, the official cautioned that the numbers can change [?] as can the overall number of hostages. While the total number of hostages continues to remain unclear, a number of reports have said as many as 41 hostages were being held. An official at BP told ABC News that there are approximately 700 local staff and contractors at the facility and

20 international BP staff and contractors

Bombers kill more than 35 across Iraq 16 Jan 2013 More than 35 people died in a suicide attack and other bombings in northern Iraq and Baghdad on Wednesday. Wednesday's attacks came a day after a suicide bomber killed an influential Sunni Muslim lawmaker in the west of Iraq, where thousands of Sunni protesters have been holding mass demonstrations against Prime Minister [US-installed dictator] Nuri al-Maliki. Sunni turmoil erupted in late December after state officials arrested members of a Sunni finance minister's security team on terrorism charges. Authorities denied the arrests were political, but Sunni leaders saw them as a crackdown.

US marine pleads guilty to urinating on corpse of Taliban fighter in Afghanistan 16 Jan 2013 A US marine who pleaded guilty on Wednesday to urinating on the corpse of a Taliban fighter in Afghanistan is likely to be demoted one rank under a plea agreement, although a military judge called for a much harsher sentence. Staff Sergeant Edward Deptola admitted multiple charges at a court martial, including dereliction of duty for desecrating remains, posing for photographs with corpses and failing to properly supervise junior marines. The judge, Lieutenant Colonel Nicole Hudspeth, would have sentenced him to six months confinement, a *5,000 (£3,100) fine, demotion to private and a bad-conduct discharge, but she is bound by terms of the plea agreement Deptola reached with military prosecutors. A general will review the sentence and could choose to lower it.

Bradley Manning denied chance to make whistleblower defence 17 Jan 2013 Bradley Manning, the US soldier accused of being behind the largest leak of state secrets in America's history, has been denied the chance to make a whistleblower defence in his upcoming court martial in which he faces possible life in military custody with no chance of parole. The judge [Colonel Denise Lind] presiding over Manning's prosecution by the US government for allegedly transmitting confidential material to WikiLeaks ruled in a pre-trial hearing that Manning will largely be barred from presenting evidence about his motives in leaking the documents and videos. In an earlier hearing, Manning's lead defence lawyer, David Coombs, had argued that his motive was key to proving that he had no intention to harm US interests or to pass information to the enemy.

Metropolitan police to roll out Tasers in response cars across London --Plan to cover all boroughs will increase number of stun guns from 800 to more than 6,500 17 Jan 2013 The Metropolitan police is spending more than £800,000 a year on equipping response vehicles in London with Tasers, despite growing concern among human rights campaigners and some politicians over their use. A question to the mayor's office for policing and crime by Jenny Jones, assembly member for the Greens, reveals the budget for the weapons will be £817,864 a year during the first stage of the rollout, which will eventually equip response vehicles with Tasers in each of the capital's 32 boroughs. Met commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe has said he wants to see the stun guns in everyday use by response cars - a change in policy from their previous use, which was restricted to specialist firearms officers and TSG officers.

Undercover police used James Bond-style womanising tactics 17 Jan 2013 The womanising tactics famously deployed by the fictional spy James Bond to glean information may have been used by undercover police, a High Court judge has suggested. Considering the case of a group of environmental activists who claim they were tricked into forming relationships with covert officers, Mr Justice Tugendhat cited Bond as the best known fictional example of an intelligence services member who used relationships with women for his own professional ends. The case centres on the claims of 10 women and one man who are seeking compensation for emotional trauma allegedly caused by officers infiltrating activist groups.

Proposed New Nuclear Reactor at Fermi Plant Clears Hurdle 17 Jan 2013 The U.S. Nuclear 'Regulatory' Commission has [insanely] found that environmental concerns are not significant enough to halt the construction of a proposed new reactor at the Fermi plant in Monroe County. Fermi owner Detroit Edison applied to the NRC in 2008 to build one of the newest generation of nuclear reactors at its plant, located next to Lake Erie in Frenchtown Township. The reactor, known as Fermi 3, is the first of its kind currently proposed in the Midwest.

Malicious virus shuttered U.S. power plant -DHS --DHS refuses to name plant 16 Jan 2013 A computer virus attacked a turbine control system at a U.S. power company last fall when a technician unknowingly inserted an infected USB computer drive into the network, keeping a plant off line for three weeks, according to a report posted on a U.S. government website. The Department of Homeland Security report did not identify the plant but said criminal software, which is used to conduct financial crimes such as identity theft, was behind the incident. It was introduced by an employee of a third-party contractor that does business with the utility, according to the agency. DHS reported the incident, which occurred in October, along with a second involving a more sophisticated virus, on its website.

U.S. CEOs push plan to raise retirement age to 70, privatize Medicare 16 Jan 2013 An influential group of business CEOs is pushing a plan to gradually increase the full retirement age to 70 for both Social Security and Medicare and to partially privatize the health insurance program for older Americans. The Business Roundtable's plan would protect those 55 and older from cuts but younger workers would face significant changes. The plan unveiled Wednesday would result in smaller annual benefit increases for all Social Security recipients. Initial benefits for wealthy retirees would also be smaller. [Oh, but there's billion$ available to buy a fleet of drones for Afghanistan and to fund Israel's 'Iron Dome,' though, right? Start reading.

Obama wants to add 1,000 armed guards, counselors at schools, post-Sandy Hook 16 Jan 2013 President Barack Obama wants to put 1,000 more school resource officers and counselors in schools nationwide, according to a plan the White House has just released as the president signed 23 executive orders today, mostly having to do with gun control. President Obama's Comprehensive School Safety [sic] Program would give $150 million to school districts and law enforcement agencies to hire school resource officers, school psychologists, social workers, and counselors. The U.S. Department of Justice would come up with a model on how to best use school resource officers, depending on the grade levels at a school.

Newtown residents express support for Obama gun plan 16 Jan 2013 In this town where tragedy relaunched the nation's debate over gun violence, people on all sides of the political divide expressed support Wednesday for President Obama's proposals to ban assault weapons and establish tighter background checks for gun buyers. "It shouldn't be a Democratic or a Republican issue," said Marsha Moskowitz, a Democrat who supports the president's proposals. "It's a human issue. It's about humanity." First Selectman Pat Llodra, a Republican who is Newtown's chief executive, said she supports them, too. Llodra, who attended Obama's announcement, was in Washington meeting with mayors who support efforts to reduce gun violence, improve mental health policies and address school safety needs.

List of executive actions Obama plans to take as part of anti-gun violence plan 16 Jan 2013 The following is a list, provided by the White House, of [23] executive actions President Obama plans to take to address gun violence... Most interesting nuggets: 4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks... 16. Clarify that the Affordable [sic] Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes... 17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities. 18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers Fund 'private security' to explode the US police state. 19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

Hours after 'routine drill,' student opens fire at Calif. high school --'We will never know what his plan was. I don't think he knew what his plan was.' [Right, but I'm sure his handlers do.] 10 Jan 2013 Hours after a routine school lockdown drill, a student with a 12-gauge shotgun opened fire at a California high school, leaving another student in critical condition, police say. Taft County Sheriff Donny Youngblood says the 16-year-old gunman didn't show up for school Thursday morning at Taft Union High, but interrupted class halfway through first period. The suspect shot the victim, also 16, then tried to shoot a second student; however he missed. "The evidence is his pockets were full. He had a lot of rounds," Youngblood said.

Sandy Hook False Flag Fallout Reaching Critical Mass by Lori Price, www.legitgov.org 17 Jan 2013 Today, we read that a Newtown fourth-grade girl asked to 'ban semiautomatic weapons and large-capacity magazines.' Wow. This is one erudite eight- or nine-year-old! See: Newtown Schools Chief Tells Washington Hearing About Fateful Day 16 Jan 2013 Newtown schools Superintendent Janet Robinson on Wednesday told U.S. House Democratic leaders about the horrors of the Dec. 14 shooting and ended by sharing a fourth-grader's letter to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi asking for a change in gun laws. "What everyone in Newtown wants is for you to ban semiautomatic weapons and large-capacity magazines and to make everyone use guns safely," Robinson said, reading from the letter. "This is important so that a person cannot shoot many people at once, and/or injure people badly. Semiautomatic weapons and large-capacity magazines put lives at risk." The Newtown fourth-grade girl asked that people opposed to gun control visit the town's municipal offices, which are lined with boxes full of cards and letters, and to read one card from every box to realize just how many people want a change in gun laws. [Yes, she asked for people to visit the 'town's municipal offices.' Now, how many *fourth-graders* do you know who pontificate about 'large-capacity magazines' and 'municipal offices?' This is obvious FAKERY.]

Obama turns doctors into gun control snitches running health care spy network 16 Jan 2013 As part of Obama's 23 executive orders announced today, doctors will be transformed into gun control snitches who are ordered by Obama to ask patients about guns they might have at home. What this means is that doctor-patient confidentiality is now history. Even worse, doctors are being pressed to start interrogating patients about whether they own guns so that this information can be reported to the government. This is all being done under the cover of so-called "gun safety" but it's really about turning doctors into devious government spies who conduct covert patient interrogations under the cover of providing them with health care. Once collected by the government, this information will then be used to seize guns from those individuals under some kind of mental health designation.

Texas Proposal: JAIL Any Federal Officials Trying to Enforce New Gun Restrictions in the State 15 Jan 2013 A Texas lawmaker says he plans to file the Firearms Protection Act, which would make any federal laws that may be passed by Congress or imposed by Presidential order which would ban or restrict ownership of semi-automatic firearms or limit the size of gun magazines illegal in the state, 1200 WOAI news reports. Republican Rep. Steve Toth says his measure also calls for felony criminal charges to be filed against any federal official who tries to enforce the rule in the state. "If a federal official comes into the state of Texas to enforce the federal executive order, that person is subject to criminal prosecution," Toth told 1200 WOAI's Joe Pags Tuesday. He says his bill would make attempting to enforce a federal gun ban in Texas punishable by a *50,000 fine and up to five years in prison.

Oregon, Texas officials warn White House against enforcing new gun regulations 16 Jan 2013 State officials in Oregon and Texas are vowing to fight back against any attempt by the federal government to impose new gun control laws. The warnings come as President Obama on Wednesday unveiled a comprehensive plan to address gun violence, based on the recommendations from the Vice President Biden-led task force. The plan includes a call for legislation to ban assault weapons as well as a variety of executive actions. But in Oregon, Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller wrote a letter to Biden Monday saying his department will not enforce any new gun laws it considers unconstitutional. Meanwhile, 1200 WOAI reports that in Texas, state Rep. Steve Toth (R) plans to introduce a bill that would make it illegal to enforce in the state any federal laws restricting semi-automatic firearms or the size of gun magazines.
